The NEL ASIA table thing got me thinking, maybe I should have inquired about getting an OLF table for all the OLF Members that would have liked to show there guitars, and didn't get a table of there own? Would have been a nice testimonial to the talented builders that frequent this site. Hmm, maybe next time! |

Are other OLF'ers interested? This isn't a competition, you know -- it's a way to show your work and get feedback from your peers without the pressure of showing at a sales event like Healdsburg. We're even offering a "Student Guitar Evaluation" where you can have your guitar evaluated by the likes of Judy Threet, Julius Borges, Linda Manzer, et al. Again, it's a learning experience without fear of public humiliation. If the OLF wants a table, I'll see what I can do. |

Rick, I didn't mean to imply that any of the ASIA or OLF members would in any way humiliate me if one of my guitars was among theirs. I just think I would see how much better theirs are and that would depress me for weeks after the event. I have seen the type of builders here on OLF and am aware of some of the folks that belong to ASIA. I am just being honest when I say, I don't measure up yet. Keyword here is "yet". I'm still working on it. Sorry for any misunderstanding. |

Dave, My point was just that no one, even hacks like me, should be concerned about comparing their work with anyone else's. I didn't take it that you were worried about nasties coming from ASIA folks. When I started, I spent several days driving to builders in the Northeast, getting their critiques of my guitars. Several people were very generous with time and thought. I gained a lot from their responses but it took a lot of time and money. With the Symposia, I made it a point for people to have the opportunity to have their work evaluated in a "safe" environment -- it's incredibly valuable. We spend too much time working alone, trying to find solutions to the same problems that other solo workers are dealing with, too. The Web, OLF and other forums are great for disseminating information but nothing can take the place of hands-on evaluation. One area in which the Web totally fails is evaluating tone. I have some good players to whom I can take instruments, but nothing beats having other luthiers pick up the instrument and play it. I know where I've done less than my best in fit and finish, but having a knowledgeable set of ears evaluate the guitar is essential to my development as a builder. I truly treasure the comments and suggestions I've received at Symposia -- and try to apply them with each new guitar I make. So don't be shy! Each of us is our own worst critic. It's good to have the folks we respect give us feedback -- and it's often better than we might expect. |

but I doubt I will get depressed. Yea there will be a ton of work far better than mine at the symposium, but I hope to come home re-generated. Whenever I am feeling a little down on my building (after seeing some really great guitars) I just go to a Guitar Center and pull down the $3000 guitars and play them for about 5 minutes. That usually makes me feel pretty good about my stuff. |

Since I get FAR more out of OLF than I could ever contribute, I'd be happy to pay for an OLF table at ASIA if others would like to use it. Rick you can email me for payment details if you like. Thanks Lance, the offer stands if it's useful. Certainly a guestbook of OLF attendees would make a nice souvenir, and maybe just a spot on the table to annouce OLF gatherings would be a help as well. In any case, the table's available if anyone wants it. Guitars optional. There is no one more of a beginner than I am. I can't even play the guitar, but am determined to make one (or more) anyway... |

Jerry, What an excellent offer! The most common complaint I've heard about having a table is the inability to leave it unattended and see the other work in the hall. OLF table = problem solved! And ya can't beat FREE OF CHARGE!!! Wish I could be there! Carlton |

Jerry, Thanks for your kind offer. I wish I was good enough at building to actually show something. But I will be refinishing guitar #2, so it will be stripped. okay guys... I will try and bring a guitar. I am flying in on standby so there is always the possibilty I won't even get there at all but if I do, which would you rather have a classical or steel string on display? I could probably get away flying with only one. I think two would be pushing my luck. |

Thanks Rick! Ill get some flyer's printed up ASAP -- also, I'm busting butt (As is everyone I assume) to get two guitars finished up to bring with. Common guys! Bring what ya got! Remember, this will represent the OLF ( Makers of ALL Levels ) Maybe something less than perfect will spur on the confidence of a young yet to be guitar maker. Give me a show of hands! Who's gonna have the wherewithal to display a guitar? Robbie, Id love to see one of your steel strings if I had a choice. |

I have either sold or given away every guitar I have built with the exception of my first and the ones that are not quite finished. With the exception of a botched inlay job I would feel ok bringing my first, but I don't think that is a good representation of what I am building now. So I am torn... I would rather get feedback on my current guitars rather than my first. |

What's your opinion of displaying guitars that are not *quite* finished yet? I have been working around the clock, but won't have mine strung up for ASIA. Since this is a show for builders, I am planning on setting them up. I think they'll be interesting for people to see - and I'd like to get feedback. My hesitation is that without strings, it's more like sculpture than a musical instrument. Thoughts? (At least I'll have a playable uke.) |
